5 Ways to Spread the Yuletide Cheer

spreading the yuletide cheerNow that the holiday season is in full swing, it seems like everybody is pulling out their Christmas decorations, in attempt to add some yule tide cheer. Contents from the attic, garage and other various storage places become a little barer, and the house becomes a little more cluttered. While Christmas decorations are all about fun, they aren’t the only way to get into the Christmas spirit. Here are some fun ways to instantly

1. Buy some holiday scented candles
You know the ones I’m talking about. Smell has an incredible affect on our nostalgia, and smelling one of these babies burning will probably take you way back. I know it does for me.

2. Seasonal Drinks
Nothing like some good ‘ol fashioned egg nog to get into the swing of the holidays. Or maybe some hot cider, cocoa or seasonal coffees.

4. Start a Christmas Tradition
My girlfriend’s family has a great tradition where the grandmother gives everyone a themed Christmas tree ornament from Hallmark, with each person having their own theme (for example, my girlfriend always receives a puppy ornament). Every year everyone looks forward to getting a new christmas ornament.

5. Watch a Holiday-themed Movie
My favorite movie in this genre is “It’s a Wonderful Life”. It really is a timeless classic. There are a slew of other movies that can easily fill this niche, but here are some classics:

5. Think about how you’ll start giving
While the holidays may mean lots of gifts for some people, deep-down at its core the season is all about giving. (Insert whatever cliche fits here, like “‘Tis better to give than receive”, etc.) The real joy comes from giving.

How about you? How do you get yourself into the holiday spirit?

While you are planning for all the happy trimmings, let me suggest something simple you can do that will make a big difference in the lives of those unfortunate homeless babies in your local animal shelter. It doesn’t take any money to gather up old blankets and take them to your local shelter. Many times, those homeless ones have to lie on cold concrete floors until they are adopted, if they’re lucky, or put to sleep. A warm blanket can make a big difference.

When you drop-off those blankets, perhaps you can include a few chew toys, or other toys for the bunches of puppies that are always crowded into shelters everywhere. New blankets, old blankets, clean toys (new or old), chew toys and treats can be gifts from the heart.

And if you happen to have a family pow wow and have thoroughly discussed and agreed upon care and feeding of a new pet, you can give the very best gift of all to a homeless pet by adopting them into your home.

A word of caution: it is not wise to adopt or purchase a pet for someone else. In a previous post, I discussed the unhappy endings of most of those ‘living gifts’.

But you can make a difference if you take a few moments during this busy season to help the less fortunate furbabies, in whatever way you choose.

    You count funny….

We always get our tree, put up our lights, and (if possible) do our Christmas shopping on December 10. Having this ritual gives me something to look forward to each year.
All of our Christmas ornaments have stories associated with them, and even though everyone’s heard them before, we tell them every year as we decorate the tree.

And our holiday movie is “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”. :)

    Dear Lifedev,
Your yuletide suggestions might be welcomed by those who enjoy Christmas but you can also help to improve the season by remembering that some people dislike what Christmas has become and would prefer it simply not to happen. Other people have sad memories associated with Christmas. Please respect the wishes of those of us who just do not want to take part and for whom the scented candle is another reminder of something they would rather avoid.

Nothing gets the yuletide cheer going for me, more than watching Christmas Vacation. It’s for grown-ups, but it puts a smile on my face.
