Fall In Love With Your Strengths

Oddly enough, sometimes our biggest antagonist can be ourselves when trying to succeed. Alvin Soon has a great post on how to a) recognize signs of self-sabotage and b) how to overcome it. It’s great stuff.
My personal favorite of his solutions is #1: Fall in Love With Your Strengths.
Everyone has strengths, whether you see it or not. You could stare at a 50kg dumb-bell all day long moaning about how you couldn’t possibly carry it, even explore with a sympathetic person the past origins of why you couldn’t. Or you could start exercising your present strength with a 5kg dumb-bell, knowing that if you keep focusing on working out, one day you’ll be pushing 50 and beyond.
It’s way too easy to see our weaknesses. In the spirit of the upcoming Valentines Day, let’s take some time to rekindle our amorous affections for our strengths. Just take a couple of moments to remember what it is that you do best, and forget about your weaknesses.

Very true but the reason people are worried about their weaknesses is because they get picked on their weaknesses. Their strengths are acknowledged for sure but the ultimate goal should be turn the weakness into a strength.

Great point - this is so important. I flashbacked to the days of getting a report card and ripping it open, scanning past the good marks to find the c, d, f or teachers comments.
Something I have noticed in reading or knowing about great leaders. They all know their strengths — very accurately. Not overblown or minimized, I think they need to know them to be bale to leverage them.
Thanks!
BTW, I am really enjoying your blog!

andHapp- I’m not sure if I agree. While people do get picked on for their weaknesses, I don’t think it’s realistic to try and turn every weakness into a strength. Then you’re spending all of your time working on your weaknesses (’cause everybody’s got a ton), and not your strengths.
A general rule in leadership: focus on your strengths, delegate your weaknesss.
Dave- great point. Leaders know what their strengths are, but aren’t cocky about it. Shoot, some are very cocky and it doesn’t hurt them much. They’re still very successful because they know what they’re good at. (IE Donald Trump)

Most of the really successful people I know have a huge number of weaknesses. They are successful because the 1 or 2 things they do well, they do really really well and that is where they focus.

Great point Mark.

Yeah, I also agree with what Alvin said in his blog. I remember one good quote “There is a GIANT inside everyone”. It means actually we have very big potential to growth and have better life in future.
The most problem is, do we have positive thinking to get our potential.
