BestBuy Workers Now Measured By Productivity

BestBuy has officially rocked the socks off of the business world. Instead of measuring workers’ productivity by hours, they now use output as the basis for their metrics (called a Results-Oriented Work Environment). So, instead of having to work an 8 hour day, workers can now work as long as needed to fill their quota. They could then do whatever they wanted with their time, like leave early or play a video game. Any guesses as to what worker satisfactory is like now at the company?

For years, engagement had been a sore spot for Thompson. “I showed J.T. these scores, and his eyes lit up,” says Achen. Thompson rushed to roll out ROWE to his entire department. Voluntary turnover among men dropped from 16.11% to 0. “For years I had been focused on the wrong currency,” says Thompson. “I was always looking to see if people were here. I should have been looking at what they were getting done.”

Productivity has also been considerably boosted, and their job satisfaction and retention is the highest in company history.

    Glen,

I’m glad I stumbled upon this post. I’m excited to learn about what Best Buy is doing here. I’ve been impressed with how they’ve continued to push innovation. They also have done some work on customer profiles… not *profiling*… but how they think about their customers and cater to them: Wash Post article.

    Thanks for sharing!
