The Technology Gets Your Work Done blog has a great tip for those of us forgetful types: email yourself ideas and tasks.
Our method of carving ideas into stone is the very Norm MacDonald-esque note to self. Just as MacDonald would record “notes to self†on his miniature tape recorder during Weekend Update skits on Saturday Night Live, we suggest that you e-mail yourself whenever you have a thought that you need to recall later on. E-mail is the life blood of most organizations. E-mail is the killer application. Nearly everyone is familiar with e-mail, and uses it daily. If you e-mail yourself an important thought, you’re going to check your e-mail later on and see it there, waiting for you.
I’m going to one-up this great post: use GTDGmail to get send yourself tasks. GTDGmail is a Firefox extension that organizes your incoming email into The David’s GTD system. Not only that, but there is built in functionality to send yourself tasks and references. I’ve been using it for a couple of months now, and it’s working great.
I can’t wait to see other applications that utilize email more as a tool for organization. Most organizations use email to communicate tasks anyway, why not make it more of a comprehensive tool. 30 Boxes has talked about an upcoming feature called Supermail that is going to
“govern multiple inputs/outputs as well as the non-email communication generated from social networks and blogs.”
Look close. I think email is going to be shifting into a more comprehensive means of organization and communication very soon.
