Launching A New Site
- Posted by glen on October 4th, 2006
Well, first of all, I’d like to apologize to everyone for the lack of posting lately. I’ve been preparing to launch a new site, and consequently my time to post anything worthy has been greatly diminished. Regardless, you can bet I’ll be stepping up the posting output back to my initial rate of around one great post per day. All killer, no filler.
Anywho, let’s move on to the new site, shall we? PopDeal is a technology and consumer electronics bargain site powered by user submitted content. Users log in and post deals found around the web, and the deals are voted on. The more votes your deal recieves the higher it’s ranked. It’s like Reddit or Digg for deals. However, there’s a twist.
PopDeal provides a way for its users to make money from content they submitted. We feel that if people are going to take time to share what they’ve found, they should be rewarded. If the user has a Google Adsense account, he can enter his publisher ID upon signup. For each deal that a user submits, there are a couple of google ads shown on that page. The Google Ads will have the user’s Adsense Publisher ID embedded in it 70% of the time. (This concept is called revenue sharing.) I’m not sure how much other sites give for revenue sharing, but 70% is high. Really high if you factor in that it’s not the only way you can make money.
We also encourage users to use their affiliate links when posting deals. If you find a deal from Amazon, use an Amazon affiliate link and gain money from sales made through your link. These affiliate programs like Amazon, Commission Junction, Buy.com and others will usually give a percentage of each sale.
Signups are free if you want to check it out. It’s still in beta, so you might see some bugs here and there. You can send any feedback/suggestions through this form.
Thanks for enduring this shameless plug ;)

I like the idea of sharing deals. Though you would need a serious amount of page views for someone to make money from Google ads. I would say about a thousand page views would equal one adsense click. You also have to question is your user base ad savvy being of a geeky nature are they likely to click on the ads. How is it going so far?

Hi Dan,
I’m glad you like the concept. Right now, it’s just starting to gain traction, so not that many deals are submitted yet. I like the fact that you’re thinking about the monetization. Here’ are my thoughts:
You’re right, the user base submitting deals probably isn’t going to click on many ads. They are tech savvy and know what’s going on. BUT, these deals will be picked up by people in the search engines. Those are the people that will click on ads. So maybe initially 1,000 views would equal a click, but once the deals are picked up by Google and company, that will help a LOT.
The other great way (that all people will click on regardless of savvy levels) for users to make money is by using their affiliate urls as the deal urls. There is huge potential in making money off of that too.

This site is a carbon copy of another site that launched last month. http://www.modoshi.com This one is pay per contribution, but you also get paid for recommending deals to your friends. Check it out.
